News from the London Marathon Charitable Trust

Following the hugely successful 35th London Marathon in April 2015, Sir Rodney Walker has been appointed Chairman of The London Marathon Charitable Trust. He takes over from John Bryant, Trustee since 2007 and Chairman since 2010, who becomes Vice President.

Sir Rodney is a former chair of Sport England, UK Sport, the Rugby Football League, World Snooker, Brands Hatch and Donington Park and recently chaired the company that organised the 2014 Tour de France Grand Depart in Yorkshire.

Alan Pascoe MBE has been appointed a Trustee, taking over as Athlete of Distinction following the retirement of Joyce Smith, who was a Trustee since 1992 and winner of the London Marathon in 1981 and 1982.

Alan, a 400m hurdler who won Olympic, European and Commonwealth medals, was formerly President of CSM, the leading sports and entertainment marketing agency.

Sarah Ridley becomes Chief Grants Officer following the retirement of David Golton. Sarah, an advisor to the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and trustee of Carers Worldwide, was formerly Chief Executive Officer of The Tubney Charitable Trust, one of the UK’s leading spend out grant makers. Bryony Livesey joins the charity as Grants Administrator from her position at the Community Foundation of Northern Ireland.

The London Marathon Charitable Trust was created in 1981 and, to date, has awarded grants totalling more than £56.4 million to 1000+ organisations for facilities that will inspire and increase the numbers of people regularly taking part in sports and physical activities. Dedicated to supporting projects in London, Surrey and Silverstone, The Trust has a renewed focus on capital projects that will encourage individuals to get up off the couch and to get active.

The London Marathon Limited, the operating company of The London Marathon Charitable Trust, which organises the London Marathon, RideLondon and other world-class mass-participation events, has changed its name to London Marathon Events Limited. All profits made by London Marathon Events Limited are transferred to the Trust, which distributes grants in the areas in which the company hosts events.

“The company now organises six world-class mass-participation events each year and our company name needs to reflect that,” said Nick Bitel, CEO of London Marathon Events Limited. “We are now far more than just the London Marathon. Our event portfolio includes the adidas Silverstone Half Marathon, the Bupa Westminster Mile, the Bupa London 10000, the Standard Chartered Great City Race and Prudential RideLondon.”

Two new Directors have been appointed to the Board of London Marathon Events Limited. Bryan Smith, former National Event Coach for the marathon and a leading sports official, has retired after 18 years as Director.

The new Directors are:

Richard Bowker CBE, independent Non-Executive Director of the English Football League and Non-Executive Director of the Board of Rugby League’s First Utility Super League. Richard has previously served as Group Chief Executive of National Express, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Strategic Rail Authority, Vice Chairman of British Waterways and Group Commercial Director of Virgin.

Louisa Fyans, a Director of independent sport, entertainment and sponsorship communications agency Pitch and former Head of Marketing and Communications for BBC Sport, responsible for all external marketing and PR activity for all major events covered by the BBC. Previously she served as Head of Communications for the British Heart Foundation and the NSPCC.
